Pastor Jeffrey Harley has a story, wow!!! What a story. His journey went from growing up with plans to work on Wall Street, to serving in the military, living on the streets, working for a labor union, and now serving the poor and marginalized in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as pastor of Harambe Baptist Church and a chaplain at a Christian rescue mission.
Pastor Jeffrey is a missionary in every understanding of the word. Leaving his well-paying-job at the union to follow God's leading has come at no small cost. One of the first things is that Pastor Jeffrey and his family have some personal financial obligations they could use our help to meet. He has shared stories with me of forgoing his own salary to help others with immediate needs. There is a mortgage that is a couple months past due, among other needs. Our goal is to immediately raise at least $4000 to help catch them up. If they have no place to live it's kind of hard to serve. Every missionary needs a home, right? We'd also like to raise an addtional (at least ) $1000 to help with living expenses.
In addition, Pastor Jeffrey finds needs every day in his work with the marginalized, poor, and oppressed. I hope to have him share some of those stories on this page soon.
One particular one he shared with me was of a mother who was struggling to keep the power on with a house full of children. She lives very near a charter school, but her kids were not accepted. She now has to send them to a different neighborhood school that is 1.9 miles away. While that's too far for the kids to walk safely, it's too close for bus service. Her only choice is to send her kids to school via city transportation. She often runs out of money before the end of the month keeping her kids from regular school attendance. (This need could be fully covered for about $80 per month)
We are raising additional funds to help care for these situations, power bills, and other needs he finds as a neighborhood missionary.
