As the coronavirus pandemic spreads across the world, we are reaching out from Rio with some updates for you. While the virus does not discriminate, favela communities are especially vulnerable—they are densely populated with little possibility of social distancing or isolation, they have limited sanitation and medical care, and residents are at risk of a particularly speedy contagion. Furthermore, low-income residents live pay-check to pay-check in the best of times, and the economic pressure is heightened by the measures put in place to contain the virus.
As an NGO that works with international volunteers in the favelas in close proximity with residents, we need to minimize the risk to our volunteers, local team, and the communities we work in. For this reason, following broader government guidance, we have stopped all volunteer programs in all the communities to avoid any chance of contributing to the transmission.
However, we will continue to work with our network of local organizations to support their initiatives in response to the virus. Our partners in Rio are setting up systems to source and distribute hygiene products and non-perishable foods in their communities.
It's difficult to be at home and feel like you cannot be part of the global fight against the virus. If you can and would like to join the #todoscontraovirus (everyone against the virus) movement, we invite you to make a donation to support the favela communities in protecting themselves:
All contributions will go directly to the coronavirus relief initiatives we are supporting across the favelas in our network. Donations will enable the purchase and distribution of hand sanitizers, cleaning kits, and basic food baskets, priced at approximately $3, $10 and $15 USD respectively.
Any and all donations are most welcome - please feel free to share this with your own network so we can get as much support as possible in this unprecedented situation. Obrigado - thank you!
