Want to join me in making a difference? I'm raising money for MJ Forbes, an ambitious young man from Jamaica who is currently being mentoring by Sol Adventurers Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit based in California which empowers youth to discover their gifts, share them with the world and reconnect with their community. We are bridging the gap between elders and youth, carrying ancient wisdom forward to the next seven generations. We offer mentorship and enrichment programs in California and Jamaica and host a weekly multigenerational radio show, Sol Adventurers Live as a platform to bridge the gap between youth and elders.
So, back to MJ, this Deputy Head Boy placed 9th in Jamaica on the 2019 Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) Caribbean Studies and graduated from Glenmuir High School in May Pen, Clarendon, Jamaica. He has been offered a scholarship to a premier school in Canada, York University but he needs our help to cover all the costs as he comes from a struggling household where the sole income comes from an ailing parent. MJ gleans inspiration from the great Maya Angelou who said,
“Dare to let your dreams reach beyond you”
and he can do just that if we come together as a village to empower and support him.
I am going to turn things over to MJ and let him tell you about himself.
My name is Michael Forbes, known to most as MJ. I want to start off with a great thank you to everyone who chooses to donate. My heart fills with joy and hope thinking of those persons who contribute to my dreams of becoming a psychiatrist so that I can assist my community. Words are not sufficient enough to express my immense gratitude. The journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step and because of your kind-heartedness; we can go far on this journey. Notwithstanding, we have quite a few more steps remaining to reach our destination but I dare to trust and believe that my dreams will indeed become reality. I understand the humble virtue of overcoming trials and tribulations in making the best of any opportunity received.
So a little bit about myself, I currently serve as the President of the Jamaica Prefects’ Association, as well as Deputy Head Boy of Glenmuir High School in May Pen, Jamaica. I served as a delegate to the WFUNA International Model United Nations New York in 2019. I’ve served as President of both my school’s United Nations Club and Debate Society, Public Relations Officer for both the Red Cross Society and Quiz Club, as well as House Captain, Academic Mentor, Youth Assisting Youth Mentor, Science Club Member, and Class Monitor for five years in a row. In 2019, I was graciously awarded the Most Responsible and Trustworthy Student of the Year.
During my recent academic pursuits, in the regional Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) I attained 16 high-quality subject passes; in the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) I attained 11-grade ones, and in the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) I attained 4-grade ones and a two. Among these, I topped my examination class in CSEC Chemistry and ranked in the top ten of the Jamaica Merit List for CAPE Caribbean Studies. Despite the chaos the world currently faces, I stand steadfast to carry on my blazing academic excellence in this year’s CAPE examinations, as I look to cap off my high school career. I aspire to commence my studies at one of Canada’s leading universities, York University, where I have been awarded several scholarships. I will forward to Canada mid to late August to participate in orientation followed by my classes in early September. I am pursuing a double major in Biology and Psychology within the next four years.
The York University Office of Financial Services, estimate the total costs for the Academic Year 2020-2021 is $34,624 USD ($47,076 CAD). I was awarded a $10,000 YU Academic Excellence Scholarship for International Students, a $2,000 Faculty of Science Entrance Scholarship and a $2,000 York University International Scholarship of Merit totaling $10,296 USD($14,000 CAD). Although a generous award this leaves a balance of $24,328 USD(33,076 CAD) to cover the remaining tuition, books, housing, meal plan, and health care. In addition there are fees for an F-1 Student Visa, flight, platform, processing and administrative fees.

I am graciously seeking financial assistance to acquire the remaining balance of $28,587 USD ($40,486 CAD). I am beyond honored to be given the opportunity to chase my dreams; however, my heart aches when I consider the funds to finance such a dream are not readily apparent. But I know I deserve this so my hope and faith persist.
I have an immense concern for the welfare of others, as well as a deep love for both natural and social sciences. As such, I intend to combine both passions to pursue a career in psychiatry. As a psychiatrist, I plan to bring more attention to the oft-overlooked issue of mental health, as I do my part in maintaining the mental and social wellbeing of my community, both near and at large.
I hope that you will make a kind and generous donation, as I continue to daringly let my dreams reach beyond myself. For now, and always, I send you my utmost gratitude. Remember that every donation will help make an impact, whether its $1 or $5000. Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to me. If you are unable to donate at this time, help this campaign thrive by sharing and following up with all your contacts - friends, family, colleagues, EVERYONE! Thank you! Continue to take care and keep safe.
Sincerely, Michael Forbes President, Jamaica Prefects’ Association Deputy Head Boy, Glenmuir High School
