Covid-19 Threatens to Sink Boats
Williamsburg Boat Club (WBC) is the only community rowing program between Richmond and Hampton Roads. In a sport epitomized by close teamwork, Covid-19 has forced cancellation of all rowing programs into June. We need funding to sustain basic operations until we can do what we do best – provide a health and fitness outlet to rowers aged 12-80+ regardless of ability. Every $100 donated funds the cost of one training session.
As with other non-profits, and many of our own families, the suspension of activities from Covid-19 has created extreme financial hardship. As a non-profit we balance member dues against operating costs to keep fees as affordable as possible for the community we serve. Suspension of rowing into June has eliminated the revenue used to fund all the costs related to support on water programs, such as equipment upkeep and loans, insurance, and more.
Over the course of the next 8 weeks, our goal is to fund 200 team training sessions, roughly half of our Spring season!
Again, your help is vital to our success; every $1 supports over a minute on water; $100 supports a full session!
The mission of WBC is to provide a high-quality, positive rowing experience to members of the surrounding communities from all skill levels, ages, and backgrounds. We focus on outstanding coaching to create a broad range of rowing opportunities.
No rower’s potential should be limited by our programs or cost.
Since our formation, WBC has actively supported the growth of rowing on the Virginia Peninsula at Youth, Collegiate, and Adult levels, and Williamsburg has become a center for Youth Rowing in our region. WBC has outreach to young athletes at all area schools and home schools, helps train coaches and support staff, and regularly partners with and raises money for other local non-profits.
Our rowers have their own unique stories – a youth rower juggling rowing and Fife & Drums, a former college rower racing for the first time in 50 years, a schoolteacher from WBC’s learn to row program competing at the Head of the Schuykill, and a High School Girl’s Boat medaling in the U17 National Championships.
WBC has not been able to qualify for the federal stimulus CAREs Act – we are too small to support permanent employees and other infrastructure. We know many of you are struggling too. But maybe when that federal stimulus or tax refund check arrives, you can think of our local rowers and help fund a few minutes of rowing.
We wish everyone good health, invite you out on the water, and thank you for your support!
