For more than three decades, HomeSharing has been helping New Jersey residents in need of safe, affordable housing solutions. People who want to share their homes with individuals who need affordable housing are matched. Homeowners – who we call “Providers” – might be older adults with grown children living far away. They want to stay in their longtime home but need a little extra help around the house or with errands, shopping or getting to and from appointments. They may have a large house with space for a tenant, or “Seeker,” who can help offset a Provider’s expenses with rent or can help with errands and household chores. A Seeker might be newly divorced or unemployed and need some time to get back on their feet. Every home share situation is unique, and each match is a win-win for both the Provider and Seeker. Providers get to stay in their homes and maintain their independence and Seekers have a safe, affordable place to live.
Home sharing is an increasingly popular option as New Jersey residents grapple with some of the highest rents and property taxes in the nation. We take great care to match people whose personalities and needs fit well together, and often the two parties forge lasting friendships. The need for shared affordable housing has become even more pressing with the onset of COVID-19, as Providers struggle with living alone and Seekers are more anxious about reducing their costs as soon as possible, given the uncertainty about whether and when they will be employed again.
COVID-19 has profoundly impacted our organization’s mission and threatens our ability to continue to serve our state’s residents in need. We hold several fundraising events each year to fund our operating expenses. We are a small not-for-profit organization that employs a staff of skilled social workers who screen applicants, conduct interviews to help match Providers and Seekers, conduct home monitoring visits, facilitate shared living agreements, and so much more.
Due to the pandemic, we are unable to host fundraisers, and grants are harder to obtain. We are appealing to our friends, constituents, and all our caring New Jersey neighbors for help. Every little bit counts. Any donation you are willing to make will help cover our operating expenses and loss of funding due to the coronavirus pandemic, so we can continue to help our residents who critically need affordable housing solutions.
