Help families in Kinsenso, Kinshasa, Democratic republic of the Congo by providing clean water and sanitation training.
Kinshasa is a large city with a growing population. Unfortunately, some of its municipalities are neglected (lack help from humanitarian presence) and the people who live in those areas face several challenges that prevent them from leading a healthy life. Among these disadvantaged areas, the health zone of Kisenso has been our focus this year. This urban-rural health zone contains more than 457,801 inhabitants of which 17% or 26,930 constitute children from 6 to 59 months, an age group with high potential for malnutrition.
This health zone has several cases of malnutrition that are not treated properly due to lack of funding. The main health facility in this health area doesn't have a nutritional service. Many cases are sent to the Esengo center, which operates at 30% because it does not have any suitable nutritional input. This center has not been supplied for 5 years by any partner or national or international.
Clean water, basic toilets and good hygiene practices are essential for the survival and development of children. The women and men of these municipalities have to travel long distances to have access to drinking water. They are forced to drink untreated water from wells and natural sources, which makes them vulnerable and exposed to several diseases.
During their long journeys in search of drinking water, the women are also subject to attacks by street gangs (kuluna) who take advantage of this situation to terrorize passengers.
We are working with our local partners to bring relief to this health zone.We need to extend the therapeutic nutritional units to all the health areas (now limited to 2 out of 17) and to reactivate the search for cases of malnutrition in this community. We will strengthen the level of knowledge of nurses and community leaders of all the health areas and provide all the supply needed to take care of all the children affected and make sure that no other kid will suffer from malnutrition. We also need bring drinking water closer to the community by adding more water stations and save lives.
Join us in this mission by funding our goal to supply clean water and food.
