Dominic story it's not one that I thought would happened to us, but on November 13th 2017 our lives changed forever. We walked into the ER thinking Dominic was suffering from pains from his recent illness with mono, after waiting for a few hours for blood work to come back, we heard the words that made my heart stop... Dominic is DKA and has what we believe is type 1 diabetes, and we're rushing him to the children's ICU. At that moment, I had to turn to my son as his eyes filled with tears, and tell him it's going to be okay. We spent 4 days in ICU trying to wrap our heads around the idea that Dominic was now going to be insulin-dependent for the rest of his life. We quickly learned that we had to set alarms to check his glucose levels, count carbs for everything he ate and drink, we learned how to give injections/ draw blood, and support Dom through this all. In the past 3 months I've been through self-blame, anxiety of worry, stress, sleep deprived , angry that as a mother I can't fix this, but most of all I've developed motivation like never before. Seeing my brave boy tackle this terrible illness that no child should ever have to deal with, has made me so incredibly driven to find a cure!! Yes we've had our cries over Dom wanting to feel "normal ", but he's learn to make this his new normal. Dominic definitely has not let T1D stop him. Two weeks after being out of the hospital he played alongside of his football crew the Jensen Beach Falcons at the AFL football Nationals and place 2nd in the nation. T1D won't stop him, it won't defeat us, but it will make us stronger. Please help us raise money for a cure at the 2018 Maceys Believers Walk, April 28th 2018. Join Doms team by pledging a donation or coming out to walk along side of Dom and other Diabetic children that are trying to be injection free!
