Often times, when a foster youth turns 18, they age out of the system, and are left to fend for themselves with no guidance and no support. In fact, 35,000-40,000 foster youth A YEAR are removed from the system. They are then left to fend for themselves without family support or monetary support and must figure out how to transition into adulthood alone. Statistically, 1 in 5 of the aged-out foster youth will become homeless and 50% of foster youth who age out will experience periods of homelessness. If by chance, the foster youth is able to secure housing, often through section 8 housing, they come home to a barren apartment, with no furniture or basic necessities. They eat and sleep on the floor and keep their clothes and personal items in plastic garbage bags. A Sense of Home is working to eliminate those statistics! They provide all the furnishings to the apartment at no cost to the foster youth, allowing them to come home and feel like they belong. Helping them feel like they CAN survive adulthood, like they ARE important, like they DO matter! A Sense of Home allows gives youth who age out of the system a chance to survive in the world! Please help these foster youth transition into their first homes!
