There is nothing that reminds me more about the meaning of life than the holidays. So I wanted to take this opportunity to reach out to all my friends and family to share my gratitude for all that we have. Some of you know me well and some not at all, but I have always wanted to save the world.
I still want to save the world and have many causes it can be overwhelming. So I found an organization that will help me make a greater impact in many area's that are important to me. The International Rescue Committee gets the best bang for every dollar with it multitude of causes and over 92% of donations going directly to its causes.
I am asking for all my friends and family to help me change the world by donating instead of buying present and giving things we don’t even need. Please take a look and help in any way you can.
My personal story and why I want to save the world??? Well, this is my history……
My mother, an Italian born in Rome and a teenager in World War II, was not only a concentration camp survivor, but a hero who risked her life on a daily basis to save others. She hid a Jewish mother and daughter through most of the war, successfully saving their lives. Up until she was discovered and taken to be assassinated, she saved dozens of men, both Jewish as well as Italian partisans that defected from the fascist army, by hiding them in disguise. She escaped the camp through the connections she had created in the underground, and was a prime example of the power of human connection and love. After each bombing, she ran to the streets to hold the dying so they would not be alone. These memories haunted her for the rest of her life, but she was still passionate about living, with an infectious zest that made her so loved by anyone she touched.
My father, a self-made man who was born to a poor family in Florida, lost his dad at the age of five. At fifteen, he ran off to join the Navy where he showed fake ID to be of age to fight in World War II. Although he graduated from an Ivy League law school with honors even winning the prestigious moot court award and was a very successful Wall Street lawyer, he was unfulfilled and became very involved in politics. He worked on the Bobby Kennedy Campaign and alongside Sargent Shriver to help create the Peace Corp, Head Start, the war on poverty and civil rights. He then created a revolutionary organization that placed corporate executives in leadership roles within government organizations. Coming from his own disempowered upbringing he was also an advocate for children, he believed that kids had no power in the world and felt that their stories needed to be told through mainstream media. Through the Children’s Express, which he created in 1975, he trained kids, ages eight to eighteen, to be reporters and editors. This not for profit organization was so successful that it won a Peabody Award and an Emmy Award for their coverage of the 1988 presidential campaign.
As the child of two do-gooder-spirits, was both painful and inspiring. In the end it is no wonder that I grew up advocating for others. I always wanted to help people—starting with my parents. At age five, after my parents had separated, I saw the sadness that came with this destruction of the family until and I spent years with many attempts to put them back together. By age eleven, I had become invested in other causes. I remember often dragged my entire puppet theater through the streets of the west village to fundraise and create public awareness of Willowbrook, a facility for the mentally ill, where a lot of abuse was taking place. I raised over $100 for the cause which was a pretty big deal back then and for my age. I was also a reporter and then editor with my dad’s news service. I interviewed kids on everything from gang violence and bullying, to domestic abuse, to traveling to Japan to interview children on the effects of growing up in the aftermath of Hiroshima A social worker was born and I later earned my masters in social work etc. I now help people find love bringing me back full circle of preserving love from my childhood.
Come save the world with me!!!!!!!!!
