Peter Lang, owner of Safari West, woke up to “a wall of flames” as the epic California fires reached Santa Rosa. As everyone else escaped to safety, he stayed behind to save the zebras, cheetahs, giraffes and the many other animals that roamed his 400-acre wildlife preserve.
By stringing together yards of garden hose to reach flames and to keep himself wet, driving his jeep back and forth over embers, fork lifting flammable materials away from spreading flames and physically coaxing, pushing animals to their safety he was able to save 1000 animals’ lives. In an interview Peter said, “Had I left, it would have been absolute disaster. One thing lights another, lights another, lights another. I did what I was supposed to do.”
Peter and his wife started rebuilding the preserve the Monday after the fire and we are raising money to help them care for the animals while they rebuild.
