Five years ago, when I was first starting chemotherapy, I wasn't sure I would make it through the year. Now, 5 years later, and 5 years cancer free, I've been given the opportunity to do something I never thought possible. I've been invited to join Above and Beyond Cancer for their 2018 trip to Tibet!
Above + Beyond Cancer is leading cancer survivors and caregivers on a Journey to Tibet in August 2018. We will be undertaking a medical mission trip to work at a public cancer hospital in Kathmandu, Nepal, providing humanitarian care to their patients and families. In addition to our mission work, Above + Beyond Cancer will lead the group of survivors and caregivers on our first-ever journey to Mount Kailash in Tibet. Pilgrimages to and around Mount Kailash are sacred to four different religions and dates back thousands of years. The path around the mountain is 32 miles long and reaches an altitude of 18,471 feet. The mission work in Kathmandu and circumambulation of Mount Kailash will take 21 days to complete.
As you can see, this is bucket list stuff right here! The part I'm most looking forward to is getting a chance to give back to others who are going through their cancer journey both overseas and right here. Years ago, when I was on a walk I struck up a conversation with a couple who were training to do an Above and Beyond trip. They talked to me about it, and encouraged me to look into it. At the time, I thought because of chemo and cancer effects, I would never be able to make a trip like that. Mentally, I couldn't even imagine planning that far ahead, because the future was such a scary thing for me. Now, I'm still scared, but it's time to get out of my comfort zone and take a leap.
Hope is stronger than fear.
