Like so many others, I have watched in horror as the Syrian Civil War---entering its eighth (8th) year---has escalated. Every time we collectively thought, "This can't get worse," we were immediately proven wrong. In recent weeks the stories out of Eastern Ghouta have been unfathomable, and they remind us this war knows no bounds. On February 20th, according to the International Rescue Committee, nearly 100 civilians were killed by aerial and artillery attacks—making it one of the deadliest days of the conflict. The destruction and death continue as I type this.
We can do more than watch these atrocities unfold. Humanitarian organizations are working overtime to provide food, fuel, & medical supplies; they are funding operational costs for pop-up clinics and refugee camps; they are partnering with local groups to support their efforts and directly meet people's needs; and they help resettle refugees. These organizations have committed to providing life-saving services and supplies for as long as there is a need.
The International Rescue Committee is one of the organizations at the forefront of the humanitarian response in Syria and other crisis-affected areas around the world. Their efficient, coordinated response to crises has made a difference in the lives of millions, and that is why I am asking you to join me in my support of the IRC. By donating to this fundraiser, you are ensuring the IRC's life-saving programs continue to reach those who desperately need them.
This is the second time the IRC is receiving the donations from our birthday fundraiser, and that is because I firmly believe in the power of their work. There are innumerable factors involved in the ongoing Syrian war, some of which are beyond our influence. We do, however, have the ability to support the victims of this war, our fellow human beings. Please join me in this effort and donate to the IRC today.
