Hearts and Ears is in need of a bigger space to expand their services to the community. For the past 6 years, the center has been operating in a small office space attached to the 611 Park Apartments. Moving to a larger space will allow us to extend our mental health services as well as add substance use and harm reduction services for the community.
Hearts and Ears Inc is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that is a Peer-run, Trans-led wellness and recovery center. The center has provided resources and behavioral health peer support to sexual and gender minorities age 18 and up for over 20 years. Located in the Mount Vernon area of Baltimore City, the center focuses on the LGBTQIA+ community's unique behavioral health needs. Individuals who come to the center not only deal with the stigma of having a mental health diagnosis or recovering from substance abuse, but also deal with the stigma they face due to their sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.
Hearts and Ears holds a variety of groups and activities for its members as well as providing assistance with finding and resources they may need. The day usually begins with a wellness check-in group that allows members to express what they are feelibng mentally, physically, and emotionally. It also includes a "Fave of the Day" such as Selfcare Saturday, F-word Friday ( PG version), Throwback Thursday, etc. Other groups the center provides include Anxiety Support, Creative Writing, Transmasculine/Transfeminine/Non-Binary Support Groups, and WRAP Support. There are also activities for members to participate in too, such as Art, Music Appreciation, and Game & Movie Day. During the holidays, Hearts and Ears has hosted Thanksgiving dinner for its members and the community along with Halloween and Holiday parties.
The center's atmosphere has a welcoming "family" type of feel. It is a safe space for sexual and gender minorities that is free of judgement, discrimination, and harrassment. This is important to the members of the center beacuse these are things that they face from society outside of the center. Many have experienced losing friends and family, and in many cases, housing, employment and discrimination when seeking services, especially the transgender community. Safety issues are also a factor our members deal with daily. Transgender individuals who lack housing, find that places like shelters are not safe for them.
