Heart and Hand Society has for many years been rescuing abandoned, stray and abused cats and those that were on Death Row at the NYC high kill shelter. As such, our biggest expenses are food, litter and veterinary care. Pictured are several of our rescues. Mini Minou/Long Legs was found in our car's engine dehydrated and with URI, Tommy had an eye hanging out and a tooth through his lip, Nougat, covered in scabs, Sheena, had an injured eye. Most of our cats would not be taken in by shelters that only want young, friendly, healthy kittens and cats. Ours have chronic medical conditions like IBD or are shy, skittish or not socialized. We strive to take excellent care of the cats, and fortunately we have great vets. We also take care of cat colonies, trapping, spaying and neutering, and socializing as much as possible. We screen potential adopters with adoption questionaires, home visits and veterinary references.
We have a small shelter consisting of a house and a large barn. The barn is finished on the interior with heaters, lighting and flooring. We are now faced with the need to repair one side of our barn that has deteriorated due to harsh weather. We have received a cost estimate of $8000 to structurally repair that side and put vinyl siding on it to prevent future deterioration. The cats are free range inside the spacious barn, and we would be forced to relocate them into less spacious conditions if the barn is not repaired by winter. We are also figuring on $4000 for near future veterinary bills. Your help is urgently needed for us to continue helping the strays and abandoned cats in our country location.
