In 2010 the ten children of James P. and Debra Fitzgerald Healy established the Foundation as a gift of gratitude to honor their parents. James and Debra have selflessly dedicated their lives to the education of their children. They believe the foundation of a quality education should be the legacy that they leave to their sons and daughters. Both have been steadfast in providing their children with the gift of excellent educations: a gift which Jim and Debra envision will manifest itself for the good of others.
Their vision would not be easily accomplished; but with their blue collar values and determination, Jim and Debra have never lost focus. As a public school custodian and nighttime deliveryman, Jim worked countless hours to provide the financial means necessary to support a family of twelve while supplementing the cost of ten high school and college educations. He serves as a paramount example of honorable work ethic for his children to emulate. Debra "holds down the fort" as she works her way through myriad school visits and reams of financial aid paperwork all the while fostering an infectious atmosphere of love and learning inside their home. James and Debra's unwavering commitment to their legacy of love and education has not only inspired their children to establish this foundation but also serves as a continual reminder of the challenges which parents willingly confront to provide their children with the gift of education.
The Healy Foundation seeks to step in and give under-resourced, high-performing college juniors and seniors the financial means to finish their education at a time when unexpected personal hardship jeopardizes their academic aspirations. Unanticipated adversity (e.g. parental unemployment, grave family illness) during one’s college education is an undeniable challenge for any student; however, the financial burden of such personal setbacks puts low-income students at increased risk of dropout and academic regression, obscuring their pathway to financial security.
Since our founding in 2010, we have raised over $100,000 in donations that have generously supported our many deserving scholars. They have gone on to thrive in careers and continue to be a part of the Foundation as donors themselves, participants in our events, and close friends whom we continue to personally support and counsel in their pursuit of rigorous careers.
