On February 10, 2021, our friend and colleague Julia Maus lost her father Earl Maus after his with battle with an aggressive form of cancer. He was diagnosed in early 2019 and was told he would not make it to his next birthday. Never one to be counted out, under the care of his wife of 39 years Jean, he made it to two more. At Earl’s request the family will not be having a formal funeral or memorial service at this time. To ensure everyone’s safety during the COVID-19 pandemic. A celebration of his life will be scheduled for summer 2021 on Earl’s beloved Leech Lake.
Julia and Al welcomed their daughter Ayla Ariel Maus Wepsala merely two weeks before Earl’s passing. Ayla was able to meet her grandfather twice before his passing and loved him instantly.
Earl was a lifelong public servant who passed his love of law and service onto Julia. Former colleagues describe him as a “legend” of the office and as “one of the finest, most honorable people [they have] ever known.” Sound like anyone we know? Earl was deeply proud of Julia and her sister Laura. He was with them every step of the way with a beaming smile and a big hug. His wife and daughters will miss his love and support for them.
A true Minnesota nature lover, his memory will live on with his friends and the tall tales and stories that will be shared in fish houses and over poker tables for years to come.
Losing a parent is never easy but, it is particularly hard at a time when one cannot see friends or family. To show Julia our support and to honor her father’s memory we have organized this fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.
