Black Squirrels or Fords?
Call us whatever you want. At our core Haverford lacrosse players are thoughtful, team-centric, and always eager to do the right thing, the right way.
If you really want a great oral history, get a chair, reserve a carrel in Magill and comb the archives or maybe just text the available primary source material --- Richie Schwab, Chris Norton, Steve Emerson, among many, many others -- who were part of Dana Swan's early groups there on Lancaster Avenue.
Consider Haverford's success over the years. Whether it was Richie Schwab carving up opponents in the late 70s, Chris Anderson and Brian Bean putting the Fords on their backs in the 90s, or elite goal scorers Mauri, Distler, Granoff, Fleishhacker, Gregory and Hjelm and even better backstoppers Peterson and Banno putting Haverford in the national conversation at the start of the of the century; the formula has always been the same. Mix good people who put the team before themselves and the results take care of themselves.
Swat never had a chance.
Now we're being challenged again in the HL Classic. Harlem Lacrosse is a non-profit making a big impact all across the country. The program is based on a simple premise: stick a full-time coach like Swan, Murphy, Bathory, Dawson and now Taylor in a school and have them coach lacrosse but also be a full-time support system for the student-athletes on their team. The program's success speaks for itself: 1300 plus kids playing this year, hundreds of student-athletes being admitted to independent school and college with millions of dollars in scholarships, the metrics go on and on.
The program also has deep roots on Haverford's campus. Multiple employees are products of Haverford College lacrosse. Three HL alums have or are suiting up for the Fords. A number of HL tutors are former Squirrels. Haverford's lacrosse culture built around inclusion, grind, support, and fight has continued on Harlem Lacrosse's fields in Compton, Harlem, Olney, East Baltimore and Dorchester.
Harlem Lacrosse has thrown down the gauntlet with the first HL Classic and now is our time to again show all those Division I programs what the red-and-black engine on the Main Line is all about. If we follow the game plan there's no doubt we can take down a few Ivys and Division 1 powerhouses along the way.
Here's the plan:
1. Join the "Friends of Haverford College Lacrosse" team
2. Give! (maybe even a little more than a litte)
3. Provide the hype -- get our team going by sharing your GAME READY moments on social media and challenge others to get behind your giving!
Now it's our turn to carry that momentum into the off-season. Let's dominate and do the "right thing the right way" in the 1st Annual Harlem Lacrosse Classic! Your contributions will go a long way to providing opportunities and creating the next generation of eager and thoughtful student-athletes! Let's go!
