In December 2015, Maria became a court advocacy client with the ¡Basta! program. She received assistance from the ¡Basta! program with getting a civil Emergency Order of Protection and eventually was able to get a one year order of protection. After receiving court advocacy services, Maria stated that she wanted to get domestic violence counseling services at ¡Basta! as well. During this time she was also referred to an agency which provides pro-bono lawyers who assisted her with getting child support and are also now assisting her with the U Visa process. Maria moved out of her partner’s house with her two younger children to live with a family member. She was eventually able to get a job and move to her own apartment with her children. Maria continues attending the ¡Basta! program and is leaning about what domestic violence is and its effects on families and individuals. During sessions, Maria states that she now is positive about her future and living a life free of abuse.
This woman is a domestic violence survivor.
