Today is our daughter Michelle’s birthday. I cannot express how lucky we are to have such a beautiful, intelligent, and compassionate soul as part of our life. Michelle has asked that we forgo the normal birthday gift, and instead spend the money in support of a charity especially in light of how recent events are a poignant reminder of how lucky we really are. Indeed, today is also the anniversary of Philandro Castile’s murder. Philandro was an African American male who was fatally sot by police during a traffic stop, 4 years ago today. He is survived by his own 8-year-old little girl who grows up with the memory of the senseless violence against her “Daddy.” In honor of our daughter’s birthday, and in memory of Philandro and all those who suffer as a result of racism and injustice, we are donating $200 to the Equal Justice Initiative and humbly asking you to join us. EJI’s work focuses on communities that have been marginalized and assists with the ongoing work of criminal justice reform in our country. Your contribution will make and impact, whether you donate $5 or $500. Every little bit helps! Thank you for your support.
