For the past few years, I've been running as a natural way to boost my endorphins. As my running increased I decided to challenge myself to a marathon. I chose the Big Sur International Marathon becuase it looked beautiful and this might be a one time only event for me ;) . Can't beleive it's three months away (I signed up a long time ago). Hopefully I'll be able to handle the hills considering I'm running on flat land in Texas!
Upon the big climb in training that started at the end of January, it occurred to me that I want to run for a cause. It was difficult to choose a cause. I thought about what I'm most grateful for. I'm grateful to be able to run free in a safe and stable country.
A few years ago when I lived in New York, I worked in an art studio and I always felt rediculious fiddeling around with art while I listened to the news cover refugees seeking asylum due to dangerous regimes and religious persecution. The feeling led to a collection of macabre ceramic sculptures of feet. I never did anything with the sculptures. Maybe this is part of that project. It's impossible for me to fathom the trauma of being displaced from one's home due to the denial of universal human rights, or a natural disaster. It's hard for me to understand why I have been so blessed. One way I can make sense of my position of privilege is to help raise awareness and redirect resources to where it's desperately needed. And so, I have decided to raise money to donate to the International Rescue Committee. The IRC is an international non-profit organization established in 1933 which responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises, helping people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover and gain control of their future.
By sponsoring me on the 21-mile(I'm only doing 21 miles) run from Big Sur to Monterrey, CA, you are donating to a well-established organization doing important work with refugees within and beyond our country. No donation is too small. Thank you soo much for your donations and support, this fundraiser wouldn't be possible without you!
