At Learn For Life Kenya, we aim to provide opportunities for vocational training that will help young people in Kenya become employed and productive citizens.
OUR PROJECT
This #GivingTuesday we are raising $3,500 for a special hairdressing training opportunity for the youth residing at orphanages run by our partner, the Tumaini Children’s Ministry, in Nyeri, Kenya. We will be collecting donations for this project through December 4, 2018.
WHY
Hard realities in Kenya, like a 70% youth unemployment rate and the high cost of education, leave youth vulnerable, especially those who grew up in orphanages and must fend for themselves upon leaving. Young people need marketable skills to provide for themselves.
WHO
Our #GivingTuesday campaign focuses on providing training for the students who will soon leave the orphanage. About 20 students will learn the basic skills needed to provide hairdressing/barber services in their communities, thus providing a reliable source of income upon graduation. Receiving such specialized training before graduation equips them for the job market or professional certification; both paths lead to a more self-sustaining, dignified future!
AMOUNT NEEDED
Our #GivingTuesday fundraising goal is $3500. Funds raised during the campaign will:
1) pay local trainers to provide training on-sight at the orphanage
2) purchase permanent equipment and supplies for this and future training sessions
3) purchase equipment (scissors, clippers) that will be gifted to students completing training
4) facility renovations for adequate training.
Our goal is to start training in Spring 2019.
