Please Help Feed Disabled Veterans During Covid-19!
Over 30 years ago my partner and I founded Habitat P.L.U.S., Inc., (HP) a small a non-profit, providing supportive housing to fourteen psychiatrically disabled Veterans, who would otherwise be homeless. HP is a living memorial to our cousin, Stanley J. Egan, KIA in Vietnam at age 19.
They are a great group of men, who have paid a very high price for serving our country.
Our Veterans used to attend day treatment five days a week, but the coronavirus has rendered them homebound. Most are over 65 and all have underlying health conditions. One of our two live-in direct care staff moved out in the middle of the night, abandoning the very people, who fought for all of us, and leaving us with a 50% reduction in direct care live-in staff. The Veterans asked that we not rehire new staff, for fear of bringing the virus into their home and we respect that.
The Veterans can no longer go out to their day programs, so we are working 24/7 with a 50% reduction in direct care live-in staff. Despite their significant disabilities, our Veterans have been shouldering the confinement with courage and gratitude for all we do for them. They really are the exemplification of grace under fire.
But they need your help!
It has been very difficult to feed them, since the food supply chain has been affected. We stand in lines for hours outside stores only to find that shelves are bare and supplies are limited to two packs of meat to feed 14 men. We do this over and over every day and still cannot obtain enough food. We are trying to buy a steer and freezer, so we can have an adequate food supply and use our time taking care of these deserving men.
There is much talk about how the quarentine is affecting the mental health of the average person. Imagine how difficult it is for someone hearing voices or struggling with PTSD! Yet, they soldier on. But it has not been easy for them. They need our time and attention.
Won’t you help us to buy a steer, a pig and some chickens and a freezer to store them?
HP receives a small amount of funds from the state, but we must raise the bulk of our budget, while simultaneously caring for these men. The state has already indicated that our already meager funding is questionable at best, as it struggles to collect tax revenues. We need time to fight for more funding, as these men fought for all of us, and we can’t do that if we are spending the bulk of our time trying to obtain enough food to feed them.
Please, we beg you… Would you please help us feed our disabled Veterans today?! Your donation is tax deductible and greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, please call Stephen at (702) 600-3409 to speak to us directly.
Every call will be answered or returned!
