I have been with Habitat for Humanity in one entity or another for over 10 years. In college, I started as a volunteer with a group of Construction folk. Though I volunteered at the local affiliate, I had my first emotional connection on a two week trip to a New Orleans affiliate after Hurricane Katrina. The first day of arrival, my group took a tour of the Habitat neighborhood and build sites, followed by a wall raising ceremony. At the ceremony, the future homeowner spoke with such raw emotion that tugged at my heart strings. That was the moment I knew I was hooked and would be involve with Habitat in the future. If you ever have the opportunity to attend a Habitat for Humanity dedication, I highly recommend it! It is one of those experiences you can't describe well enough to capture all of the beauty, emotion, and detail to give it justice.
After college, I joined AmeriCorps and served 2 years at two different affiliates working first hand with homeowners and volunteers, leading site builds. The experience was life-altering. It grew me as a person, made me aware of real-life circumstances and taught me the meaning behind a little bit going a long way. I found myself amongst the kindest people and surrounded by God's unending love. Every future homeowner had their story to share and every story was a humbling experience.
After AmeriCorps, I was hired on full time at one of the affiliates in Delaware. During this journey I became close with many homeowners, volunteers, and co-workers. They became 2nd families to me. After a few years, another life changing moment happened in my life - the loss of my father - and I made the tough decision of leaving my 'Delaware family' to move back to Michigan to be closer to family. Fortunately, Habitat was still a part of my life and soon I was being blessed with my new Habitat family as I joined the Habitat for Humanity of Michigan team. They welcomed me with open arms and helped me through a really rough time without hesitation and without really knowing me yet.
Through many ups and downs in life all of these 'families' and 'communities' made have always been there for me no matter the miles between us. And that same kindness and love each person has given me, they pour out to families everyday. It is a blessing to be a part of this work and to make whatever difference we can.
