Dear Friends and Family:
Last February my best friend, Chris Pilaro (CAP), lost his life after a long battle to cancer. As many of you know, Chris was a warrior, a street poet, a freak of nature, and a generous soul who spent a lifetime rooting for the underdog and always giving back his time, resources, and spirit to people and organizations that mattered most to him.
The Ron Brown Scholar Program was one of these programs. Started by Chris's family in 1996, the Ron Brown Scholar Program was named to honor the memory of Commerce Secretary Ronald H. Brown, the first African-American Secretary of Commerce, a statesman and bridge-builder who was killed in a plane crash in Croatia that same year.
The Ron Brown Scholar Program is a national scholarship for low-income African American high school seniors of outstanding promise who excel academically, show exceptional leadership skills and make an impact on their communities through service to others. It is a truly incredible organization and one that I am now lucky and proud to serve as a new member of the Board of Trustees (in honor of Chris).
On Saturday, March 3rd, I will be running the Los Angeles Griffith Park Trail Race 50K (30 miles) to raise money for the Ron Brown Scholar Fund. As many of you know, trail running in the mountains is a passion of mine. It's my church. It's my safe space. And over the last year it's become the place where I think about Chris, feel connected to his spirit, his legacy, his friendship, and above all his love for the mountains.
Any donation in honor of Chris and the Ron Brown Scholar Program will be transformational and greatly appreciated.
Peace and Love,
