In the fall of 2015 my friend and colleague, David Koch, was diagnosed with Glioblastoma (GBM), an aggressive and rare form of brain cancer. Upon digesting the news, it was hard for me personally not to be overwhelmed with a tremendous sense of helplessness. David didn’t see it this way. Instead of being paralyzed by fear, he attacked this disease with a level of determination, grit, and positivity that was truly inspiring. Supported by friends and family, David set out to find a cure. Consultations with doctors, scientists, nutritionists, and surgeons led him all over the country, and he was witness to some of the most cutting edge research being done in the brain cancer space today. Through this process, one thing that became abundantly clear was this: amazing research and clinical trials are significantly reliant on fundraising to make groundbreaking discoveries.
My friend David died November 30, 2017 – he was just 43 years old. He bravely battled cancer for two long years. Today’s medicine was not able to save David’s life, but it save someone else’s life in the future – perhaps someone you know or love. David was an unbelievable man, a founding partner of Melvin Capital, a die-hard Michigan (and Harbaugh) fan, a devout Cleveland Indian, a gifted investor, a semi-pro karaoke singer, a fantasy football savant, and a dedicated father & husband.
Also a man of perfectly timed one-liners, David once told me this: “Greystroke… there are no dress rehearsals in life. Make the most of it.” That resonated with me then, and even more so today.
After David passed away, I decided that making an impact to cure this horrible disease would be a part of my life’s mission. On May 13, 2018 I will represent B*CURED and participate in the 2018 Kansas City Triathlon (http://ultramaxsports.com/races/kctri/[ultramaxsports.com]). Fittingly, the event is being held during brain cancer awareness month. I will be wearing all Michigan gear (under protest) to honor David.
B*CURED is a non-profit organization located in Greenwich, CT (www.bcured.org[bcured.org]). To date, B*CURED has awarded 28 grants to researchers at top hospitals and institutions across the United States and Canada focused on finding a cure for pediatric and adult brain cancer. Every dollar that I raise will directly support brain cancer research – see the link to my page below. Please help me in this effort, and make this a part of your life’s mission has well.
