We all know plastic and wildlife don’t mix. Not in the ocean, not here in Portland. Help us clean up the Columbia Slough!
You've seen the photos of sea turtles and albatros choked by plastic or whales whose intestines are full of trash. Most of this comes from land via our waterways, which are also choked with garbage. If you kayak on the Columbia Slough, you'll see a lot of it. Fortunately there's something we can do. #makethesloughcleanagain!
The Columbia Slough Watershed Council needs your help to support our biggest trash cleanup event of the year… The Great Slough Cleanup, July 21st! Last year, in just one morning, with a team of volunteers, canoes, and kayaks, we are able to remove over 1,000 pounds of trash from the Columbia Slough! This year we hope to knock that number "out of the water" and remove even more trash. This takes funding support, which is where you come in.
Your donation will 1) support our staff in working with community organizations and volunteers, 2) cover costs for responsibly disposing of the waste we collect and 3) continue our outreach efforts to curb the sources of garbage from ending up in the slough in the first place.
MORE ABOUT THE SLOUGH: The Columbia Slough is an urban waterway that meanders through North Portland, Oregon. The watershed is home to approximately 186,000 residents. Unfortunately, the people and businesses within the watershed have many negative impacts on the environment and the water. In particular, trash finds its way into the waters through runoff from rain or just good old-fashioned littering. This is a big problem for wildlife. The Columbia Slough is a refuge for over 175 species of birds and 26 species of fish. These species and all the ones downstream and in the ocean are directly affected by the trash in the slough everyday.
