The animals need your help! We need to pay off our mortgage so the sanctuary property can finally belong to all the rescued animals for years to come. Being a smaller non-profit our monthly mortgage payments take a hefty chunk from our monthly donations. We'd love to have more funds available for veterinary care and feeding the animals. We want the security of knowing the property will be paid off and we can keep doors open to helping animals in need. Our organization started as Pig Hoppers in 1995 by our founder the late Lake Jacobson. It began as a safe haven for potbelly pigs, rabbits, ducks, chickens and cats. In 2003, changed name to Great Lakes Rabbit Sanctuary. In 2005 the sanctuary moved to Willis, MI. 6 months later we signed a land contract partnership with Best Friends Animal Society, took in 511 rabbits from Reno, Nevada that were involved in a large scale hoarding case. Since then we have opened our doors to animals that were victims of abuse, neglect and abandonment. We currently have around 80 rabbits, 11 potbellied pigs and 3 cats. We rescue rabbits from all across Michigan, and when able, from other areas of the United States as well. After their arrival at GLRS, the animals are given proper medical care, spayed or neutered, and are then ready to meet their potential adopters! GLRS is a no-kill facility. Those animals who are not eligible for adoption, either due to health or temperament, live out their lives peacefully at the sanctuary.
