OUR CLASS STORY
Sophia and Inaya were facetiming each other when Inaya found out something amazing. “Hey Sophie, I just found out that we might go back to in-person school!” Inaya said eagerly.
“WOW! Really? That is awesome! I really miss market day! I always got tons of brownies! What do you miss most about in person school?” Sophia exclaimed. “I really miss all the long field trips, being able to talk to all your friends, and all the parties.” Inaya replied.
“Oh my gosh! It is 2:00! We have got to get to homeroom!” Sophie yelled! “Yeah, let’s go tell everybody!” Inaya said. We both quickly rushed to our Google Meet for class. “As’salaamu Alaykum everybody!” Ms. Amina said, Sophia and Inaya hastily raised their hands. “Ms. Fatima, is it true that we might go back to in-person school?” They both blurted out eagerly. “We are not really sure yet, because there is still a safety issue. We will tell you if the admin gives the green light.” Ms. Fatima replied. “But there’s still a chance that we might go back to in-person school?” Inaya asked, sincerely hoping that she would be able to be back in person sooner rather than later.
Once the news broke, everyone started murmuring with excited chatter. “I really miss having recess together; what about you, Mariam?” asked Nora. “I miss getting to see my friends and hanging out or actually doing stuff during lunch,” replied Mariam. “Well if we were to go back to school in person, what would you want to do first?” asked Nora.
“I didn't really think of that but.. Oh! I know! Take a tour around the school. I could have forgotten how it looks!” Mariam replied. “Hmm, well I would probably do the same as you, and take a little tour. Especially because the setting of everything may be different now,” Nora responded somberly.
“Aw man, I was so excited to go on the field trip to Pennsylvania. I wonder if we’ll still be able to trips once we go back. I also loved to play football with my friends,” said Esa, getting caught up with his wishful thinking.
“Yeah, I wish we could do all that stuff now but at least we are getting good news,” Mohsin responded in earnest. “We probably will go back when everything is safe.” Amira responded. “But when is that going to happen? It seems like it will happen in a billion years!” Maryam exclaimed. “I have no clue. Maybe tomorrow, or next week, or maybe in a year.” Amira replied.
“Well what are you going to do when we go back?” Maryam inquired. “Well I think I would just say hi to everyone I see. What about you?” Amira said. “I will thank Allah and to celebrate I will have one huge party in place for all the parties we missed during virtual school!”
“Great answer Maryam! But until then this is our new normal!” Amira laughed! “I can’t wait to go back to school! I will hug everything I can get my hands on!” Rania said cheerfully!
“Oh man, I can’t wait to have a Market Day again!” Yezen added.
“But Noor and I are new here! How are we going to know where the classes are when we go back?” asked Rehan. “I think the desks are going to be farther apart because of social distancing.” said Noor. “I wonder how many days a week of school we’ll have?” asked Rehan.
“Yeah, and how long will the classes be?” added Noor. “What is the first thing you will do when you get back into in-person school?” wondered Rehan. “I will explore the entire building!” replied Noor. “I’m going to check out the classrooms and try my best to memorize the layout,” added Rehan.
“Yezen’s right! The first thing I wanna do when I get back to school is have Market Day ‘cuz the last market day was over a year ago and it was all socal distanced and NOTHING was homemade!” Jana told Tasneem. “Yeah, another Market Day would be fun, or I would probably want to talk with everyone first to see how they’re doing.” “Yeah you’re right, and we could go on field trips, have parties, have field day, spirit days and not be in front of a computer for class all day.” “Yes, every time I’m done with homework my eyes feel like they want to jump out of my face. But if we went on field trips, there would be only two kids in one car, and plus the parents would have to sanitize everywhere the other kid touched their car,” Tasneem replied.
“Yeah it's gonna be hard if we go to school during corona cuz everyone would need masks and hand sanitizer and we’d have to be socially distant during lunch cuz we can’t eat with our masks on, but it would still be better than all virtual.” “It would be better, and I miss not being able to have lunch with each other, laugh and play games freely.” Tasneem said. “Yeah I think that even if we go back, we would need to pay lots of attention to who's holding what and all the students would need their own supplies.” “And it would be so hard on the teachers and Mr. Saul to sanitize everything after we all left. Think of how much time it would take them…”
“I think this fundraiser will really help us get what we need to keep the school and all of us safe for when it’s time for us to go back,” Rania added thoughtfully. “I’m happy we’re doing this now and preparing from beforehand so that we’re ready for when we get that green light!”
