Hello everyone, hope you are safe and doing well.
As we all know, COVID-19 has created an unprecedented public health crisis in this country and times are hard for more people than ever. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 800,000 people died worldwide due to suicide every year even before the pandemic. The U.S. suicide rates have risen in recent years and now it is at an all time high due to the pandemic.
Suicide is still very much regarded as a taboo subject even to this day, and you never know if your loved one feels as if they have nobody to talk to. Transparent conversations regarding mental health are critical during these times, and the Samaritans have been able to continue leading these conversations and provide critical support to people. Samaritans NYC operates the only community-based, completely confidential, 24-hour suicide prevention hotline in the city that runs 365 days a year.
Unfortunately, Samaritans has lost a significant portion of its funding due to the pandemic and cancellation of in-person events. Samaritans needs our support now more than ever to continue its services. Many people rely on the Samaritans just to get through the day.
Participants of the Samari-thon choose their own wellness goals to support themselves while raising money to support others. I am joining the Samari-thon by getting at least 10,000 steps in five times a week by exploring Central Park. I realized I have been spending a significant amount of time indoors and this would help me get some mental clarity as well as serve as a way to release some of the worries and stress inside me. I will be doing this for a month until 10/30 and hopefully my cats will accompany me for some of those walks :). Please support my goal and donate to the Samaritans.
This cause is extremely important to me and any amount of contribution is greatly appreciated. Your donation will go to funding the Samaritans hotline, suicide prevention education, and support groups for those who have lost loved ones to suicide. Thank you for taking the time to read this and thank you for your support in advance! Let’s all get through this together. Stay safe.
