Couch To Marathon - Oh Boy!
If you are going to run a marathon, what better way to do it than through a charity. I will be running the 2019 Boston Marathon for Good Sports, a charity that creates access to sports and physical activity for kids in need across the country by providing brand-new equipment to youth organizations in high-need areas.
When my dearest friend Mona asked me to run the Boston Marathon with her, I told her she was crazy (the farthest I have ever run is 3 miles). She didn’t give up though and continued to educate me on all of the charities that participate. As I explored them, I was immediately drawn to Good Sports and their mission. Sports have played such an important role in my life. The friendships made and the life lessons learned have helped shape me into the person I am today. I am grateful for all of my experiences (the championships and the challenges), and I cant think of a better group than Good Sports to partner with on my road to Boston!
Good Sports believes kids who play do better. They become more confident, make new friends, are more engaged in the classroom and decrease their risk of obesity and other health-related diseases.
I have seen this first hand as an athlete, a coach, and a parent. When I was four I was diagnosed with Juvenille Rheumatoid Arthritis (JRA). Participating in sports was not always easy for me and there were times where I couldn’t do everything that my teammates were doing, but it was those same teammates that gave me confidence to continue playing. Because of the positive experiences I had when I was younger, I went on to become a collegiate athlete. My experiences inspired me to become a coach, and I coached collegiately for 10 years and internationally in the World Cup in 2013 and 2017. At eighteen months old, my daughter was also diagnosed with JRA. I want to show her that no matter obstacles she may face, that she can accomplish anything she sets her mind to (even run a marathon)!
Thank you for supporting the Good Sports Marathon Team, and helping get as many kids as we can onto the court/field.
