Dreams do come true!
On April 15, 2019, I will be running the Boston Marathon with 14 other teammates for Good Sports, an organization that gives kids the lifelong benefits of sports and physical activity by providing new equipment, apparel, and footwear to the schools, community organizations, and teams in need across the United States.
As a young girl who moved to the U.S. at age 8 and grew up in an underprivileged urban area, never in my wildest dreams would I think that one day I might be fortunate enough to live in a picturesque town along the Boston Marathon route, and have the opportunity to run for an organization that benefits children in the types of communities that I once lived in.
That is why last year when my family and I moved to Wellesley, MA I made a commitment that I would run the Boston Marathon. I would run for my parents who migrated to the United States to give our family a better future. I would run for the kids in underprivileged communities who turn to drugs and violence. I would run to show my own kids that with hard work, perseverance and determination we can conquer and exceed our wildest dreams.
I began consistently running in 2013 after having my two adorable kids, Aleks (6) and Olivia (5). I ran to clear my head, to connect to a higher purpose, to be healthier and stronger. By putting one foot after the other I reached goals I never thought possible. My running started as a walk around the block, then a walk around the block a few times. Slowly it progressed to running, then 5K charity runs, 10K runs, and finally two half marathons. Running has given me confidence in every aspect of my life and continues to inspire me to live a full life.
I can still remember looking out the window from my family’s one bedroom apartment in Elizabeth, NJ, a city infested with gangs and drugs, seeing kids of all ages getting into trouble. Looking back now, I think about how different some of those kids’ lives might have been if instead of hanging out aimlessly on the playground they had the chance to play – baseball, basketball, football or anything.
I am privileged and honored to be running for the Good Sports team with 2 other Wellesley moms and could not imagine a better organization to identify with and support. Good Sports’ mission is to give all kids the lifelong benefits of sport and physical activity by providing new equipment, apparel and footwear to youth organizations in high-need areas, such as Boys & Girls Clubs, YMCAs, schools, Hudson and Essex County in New Jersey and more.
Equipment is expensive and your support will help Good Sports give more kids in need the chance to play! For example your donation of:
$35 = Good Sports can provide a baseball or softball glove to a kid in need
$100 = Good Sports can equip a kid for soccer (uniform, cleats, shin guards, ball)
$250 = Good Sports can support a school’s entire Physical Education program with volleyballs, footballs, basketballs, soccer balls and more!
$300 = Good Sports can provide track spikes to five kids in need
$500 = Good Sports can outfit an entire floor hockey program with hockey sticks, goals, goalie padding and more!
Thank you for all of your support!
Love, Dorota Strzelecki
