I use to say that the Boston Marathon is the best day of the year... and in fact, it rates at the top, without fail. The annual Oates family photo at Mile 20 is the highlight, without question.
However, I've come to realize that the actual race day is just one moment in time in my annual marathon ritual. What I really have come to appreciate is the amazing sense of community that is involved with the race and with our fundraising efforts. I am always blown away by the unfailing generosity of so many.
So, while I'm definitely excited to toe the line in Hopkinton and slog my way into Boston for the 22nd consecutive time, what I really enjoy most is the chance to connect with so many in the months leading up to, and just following the Marathon. The collective effort we are making with Golf Fights Cancer is the real reward of my run, not the finisher's medal.
Since we started GFC, we have raised more than $6 Million! We've built playrooms, purchased equipment, funded weeks of camp, underwrote research and made all kinds of difference along the way - big and small. Thanks for your efforts in making it possible!!
