Today we are facing challenges we never imagined we would face in our lifetime. Staying at home, living with uncertainty and fear, is taking its toll on all of us. The unprecedented stress of this pandemic is felt by all, but the young people we serve are likely to bear the heaviest burdens of trauma and economic fallout. Even in the best of times, the children we serve face adversity at a higher rate than the average young person in Los Angeles. That’s why we know our mission is more important now than ever before.
We are providing vital, life-changing support to the youth of our community.
· Big Brothers and Big Sisters continue to support, guide, and mentor their Littles by playing games virtually, attending virtual magic shows, even building the same Lego set while talking on FaceTime.
· Camp staff and counselors developed a list of exciting summer camp programs that can be offered online this summer along with Camp in a Box that will be delivered to the homes of each camper with materials and activities to keep them excited and engaged.
· Teens are reaching out for social/emotional support via our Teen Talk app in numbers we’ve never seen before. In response to this growing need, we launched a virtual training for more teen advisors, scheduled teen advisors for more hours and more days to provide critical support to their peers.
· College Guidance and Scholarships have always provided important advice and financial support for students. Now, colleges are constantly changing their admission requirements and academic expectations. Our staff is providing support, guidance, and opportunities for college students to connect during these unsettling times.
We’re doing everything we can to keep kids connected in Los Angeles but we can’t do it alone! We need your help! And we want you to have fun doing it. So we're having a virtual 5K on June 14, 2020! Get outdoors in your own neighborhood, breathe in that amazing Los Angeles fresh air (but keep away from your neighbors!) and help support programming that changes the lives of kids in need.
You can do it at any time of the day, and we would love to see pictures and video. If you post on social media don't forget to use the hashtags #jbbbsla, #campbobwaldorf, #goingthesocialdistance and #virtual5krun!
