These days life is looking a little different for everyone. Each day requires us to change course and adapt in ways we didn't have to before. Here at Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters of Los Angeles we've had to do the same.
Our Bigs and Littles continue to connect with each other virtually, having hangouts, playing games and just being there to support one another For any individuals who don't have access to a computer or tablet, we've provided one so that they can continue to stay in touch.
While Camp is not currently open, our staff is hard at work! We're preparing for the days when the doors open - we know our kids will need camp and outdoors more than ever. Our team is in constant contact with families, sharing resources within the community for those that need a extra help. We've also developed virtual ways to bring the camp experience into their homes, providing them with fun activities to do with the whole family.
The Teen Talk app has become even more important than before, connecting teens with a way to safely share their issues, whether it's frustration and anxiety about the current situation, anger over losing out on important life events or more pressing issues. We have expanded our hours of operation and added on additional shifts to provide as much support as possible. We're also hosting our next training session virtually so we are able to expand our reach even further.
College guidance is still ongoing virtually, however our kick-off and culmination events have been canceled. As we look at the summer workshop schedule, we are preparing to offer those virtually if it's necessary so no teens will miss out.
Incredibly, our scholarship staff has been able to pivot to online and phone interviews so we are continuing forward with our application process! Our staff is also continuing to provide support as needed to our current scholarship recipients. We are hopeful that we will be able to have our awards event in June and July. Fingers crossed!
Last, but never least, our amazing staff!! They are working tirelessly to support the community we serve. Even in the midst of dealing with their own personal life, they're striving to make sure our campers and families are taken care of.
However we can't do it all alone. We need your help! And we want you to have fun doing it. So we're having a virtual 5K on May 5th! Get outdoors in your own neighborhood, breathe in that amazing Los Angeles fresh air (but keep away from your neighbors!) and help Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters of Los Angeles and Camp Bob Waldorf raise some money!!
You can do it at any time of the day, and we would love to see pictures and video. If you post on social media don't forget to use the hashtags #jbbbsla and #campbobwaldorf!
