你好(Nǐ hǎo) or hello! My name is Amanda McCall and I am currently a third-grade teacher at Morehead City Primary School in Morehead City, NC. Help send me, on the 2018 Global Teachers program by helping me reach my goal of $6,500.This is my fourteenth year of teaching and I have taught second grade for 5 years and the remaining years have been in third grade. I am a National Board Certified teacher and I LOVE my job. I am passionate about bettering my students in all parts of their lives and will do anything I can to make them passionate about their own learning. I first learned about Go Global NC from a parent of a student I am teaching this year. He forwarded me the link because he felt as though it was something that I may be interested in. Before I get to WHY I am interested, let me give you a bit of background about my career up to this point. I believe in the old saying, “You learn something new every day.” Being that I am a bit of a self-proclaimed perfectionist, I strive to continue learning in my profession. I am never okay with doing the same old thing each and every year because times are changing, our kids are changing…the world is changing! The day I lose my drive to learn and improve myself FOR my students is the day that I know I will be done with teaching. As an example of this, I have worked hard over the past few years to continue to better myself professionally. I am one of two certified trainers for Thinking Maps in our county. I have been the chairperson of the PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) team in our school for the past eight years. This means that I run behavioral meetings weekly for students throughout the school and am available to assist teachers who may need more help with certain behaviors in their classroom. I am trained and host college interns in my classroom from local colleges such as East Carolina University or the University of Wilmington who are pursuing their own teaching career. I am a mentor to a teacher in my building who is in her first three years of teaching. I plan and work closely with her to ensure she is successful and feels supported throughout her first few years. I am currently in the second of four courses towards adding on my AIG (Academically Intellectually Gifted) licensure to my teaching license. This involves taking a year of graduate level courses. I tell you these things listed above to explain why I am interested in Go Global NC. Locally, I have participated in as many trainings as I can to expand and share my knowledge of the teaching profession. Go Global NC will provide me with an opportunity that I have never been afforded. Just as every child has a hero or someone they want to be when they grow up, for a teacher, the Chinese are kind of like those heroes for us. We, the American public, hear about the schooling that occurs in China and the success that comes for many of those students who attend schools in China. What do they do differently? How are schools, programs and the culture so different from America? How can I bring part of what China does to my classroom? These are questions that I ask myself. In August, I began a 5-day training on something titled Math Foundations. On day two of the training, we read a book and discussed how research has shown the way that Chinese teachers solve a particular type of math problem versus how American teachers solve the same problem. The differences in approach are astronomical. If provided the opportunity to go to China via Go Global, I plan to better my students and my colleagues. I hope to take many of the practices that I see occurring in China and use them in my classroom. I will make contacts with teachers/professionals in China ad use those contacts to continue my education and improve my teaching career. I also plan to provide professional development to those who are interested in learning about the ways things are done in China that may better the outcomes of our students here in Carteret county. I hope, however, that with the help of organizations in my local area I will be able to secure enough to participate in the Go Global NC opportunity. I appreciate your willingness in taking time out of your schedule to read this. I would be grateful to receive any support you are willing to provide in my efforts to participate with Go Global NC's Global Teachers program.
