NJ is the worst state to die in.
New Jersey residents can expect to receive more aggressive care during their final phase of life than in any other state, according to the most recent Dartmouth Atlas report (www.dartmouthatlas.org). This means our residents spend more time suffering in the ICU, hooked up to machines, rather than what most would prefer – to remain in the comfort of their own home surrounded by family and friends.
As our population in New Jersey ages, more and more of us will bear the responsibility for caring for family members with serious illness. If they lose the capacity to make decisions for themselves, do you know their wishes? Do they know yours? It’s not easy to have these conversations but it can be simple. Discuss, decide, document!
Be part of a movement to change the culture around advance care planning. The Goals of Care Coalition of New Jersey depends on the generosity of our donors to provide critical information to patients and families— this information is provided at no cost when it’s needed most. Donations will be matched, dollar for dollar, up to $75,000. Make your donation count today!
Please visit goalsofcare.org for valuable tools and resources to help facilitate the conversation to ensure you get the care you need and no less and the care you want and no more.
