Ask local kids what nutritious food means and you’ll hear “strong energy” and “brain power.” Nutritious foods, like fresh produce and dairy, are essential to their development and overall well-being. Since 1977, Gleaners Community Food Bank has distributed healthy food all across metro-Detroit.
The summer months are challenging enough, as many children miss out on meals they would have otherwise received at school. This means the Quicken Loans Community Challenge comes at a critical time.
But, as we strive to give kids a Hunger Free Summer, through Gleaners’ 90+ summer sites, nearly 90 mobile sites and network of 528 partners, another challenge has emerged.
Extreme weather this spring led to a farming crisis across much of the midwest. You may have experienced the impact at your local grocery store with rising costs on produce.
Gleaners’ President and CEO, Gerry Brisson, and Food Council of Michigan Executive Director, Dr. Phil Knight, recently sat down with guests on the front lines of this farming crisis during their weekly Food First podcast to explore its impact -- which is significant.
Gleaners has pursued our mission, 'Feeding people. Nourishing lives.' since 1977. As we seek to source nutritious food for the communities and children we serve, socioeconomic and environmental factors mean your support is needed now more than ever. Because August is part of our Hunger Free Summer initiative, your dollars go even further thanks to our generous match sponsors.
Remember, during Hunger Free Summer, $1 = 6 meals. Every contribution helps.
