The Holistic Homestead launched our Homestead Market in January, and we had no idea how crucial our community resources would become just a couple months later.
How we're serving the community now
Since the outbreak of COVID-19 in Colrado, we have parntered with the Gilpin Food Bank to provide free food (including over 100 pounds of fresh produce donated); we have assembled and distributed 5 COVID-CARE packs to our volunteers busy making deliveries (including gloves, sanitizer, disinfecting wipes, masks, and gas money); and opened our Market on Wednesdays exclusively for seniors/alternately-abled/immunocompromised folks. We have remained open to serve the community, as the safest and healthiest shopping option for our community, including offering curbside pickup and expanding our delivery options.
Our Urgent Need
As a grassroots nonprofit with a mission to improve health and wellness through education, outreach, and advocacy, much of our direct impact happens through in-person workshops and events. We have had to cancel all of our workshops and fundraising events for the next several months including our Spring Cleanse, Summer Solstice Wildcrafting Party, Apprenticeship Program, Mountain Mama Fun Run, Roadside Clean-up, and Membership Appreciation Party. All of our vendors for our Farmers Market have also cancelled. These events were crucial to raising the funds we need to pay for our highway signs ($500), install our sinks ($6,000), purchase a produce cooler ($10,000) and a dairy cooler ($10,000). When all the equipment is in place, we will finally be able to apply for inspection and licensure through Public Health ($200).
While we had planned to fundraise gradually for these items, we suddenly find ourselves running a tiny market at surge capacity without the necessary equipment and storage. The Homestead Market will not be able to continue serving the community at the present level of demand without these critical pieces. We are currently losing money having to purchase ice to keep our produce cold, and we are not able to carry staples like milk, eggs, cheese, and yogurt.
Membership based & volunteer powered
We currently have well over 100 members and a handful of volunteers who keep the doors open and the lights on. It is truly amazing to realize how far we've come with a small group of committed people and a dream: to have a brick-and-mortar home for health and wellness in the heart of Gilpin County. The Holistic Homestead and The Homestead Market are truly OF the community, BY the community, and FOR the community. We believe in sustainability and collaboration, and we are asking YOU to take URGENT action to ensure the long-term viability of this critical resource:
1. SHARE this fundraiser with your extended network, through email and on social media
2. CREATE a fundraising campaign of your own for The Holistic Homestead
3. DONATE on Tuesday, May 5th, and join the global community in supporting the orgainzations that are keeping our communities strong!
