Help us support our Veterans during these uncertain times. The important work of our nonprofit is more important more than ever. Covid19 has effected the American Service Animal Society in the same ways as other businesses both financially and procedurally and we have had to close our training center doors. Normally we survive mainly on donations, our trainers positive attitudes, and some ingenuity on the part of our support staff. In these unprecedented times people are less likely to donate but the needs of the veterans remain. The services we provide, at no cost to our veterans, (all of which have a service connected disability) are much harder to replace than our trainers smiling faces. Through the good times and bad many of our students rely on us to keep them engaged and social with others outside their homes. We help them train their own dog to become their service animal while providing an important connection to the outside world. This type of connection requires working with their dog daily to build the bond between them and their companion. These dogs help improve the quality of the veterans’ lives by helping combat mental disabilities such as depression, anxiety, and other forms of PTSD. The dogs can also learn to perform life saving skills like diabetes alert, seizure detection, get help, and even retrieving medication or a telephone. Our program typically takes 12-16 months to complete based on the tasks needed in a normal operating environment. Currently we are well away from any normal environment. Although social distancing has shut down the world, the work we are committed to has not. Our veterans are as essential as they come because we asked them to give us everything for our freedom and now they are asking for a little help back. As we seek to develop a "new normal" for our training program we are challenged by all of the restraints that have accompanied Covid-19. We need your assistance to keep from interrupting our veteran's critical training path by supporting our team as we develop new virtual programs to engage our veterans for the foreseeable future. We kindly ask that you join us in supporting them. No donation is too small.
