Covid-19 is impacting each of our lives quickly and dramatically. Now is the time to come together in new ways and prepare to contribute to our wounded communities as we collectively recover from this national disaster.
CEA has been providing Individualized employment and pre-employment services to about 350 students and adults with disabilities a year. In addition to helping people find and keep jobs for other employers, CEA employs individuals with disabilities and provides our services both onsite and offsite. Service delivery has been dramatically affected as well as timely funding for these employment supports for people with disabilities. Our services have been impacted by a number of restrictions and policy changes that have had damaging unintended consequences.
CEA has had many success stories to share from the individuals we have helped obtain and maintain employment. With the COVID-19 pandemic over 70% of those we currently serve have lost their jobs, including Doug, who used to work at Chuck E. Cheese, his dream job! He worked there for two years - a true success story, until his job, like thousands of others, was necessarily eliminated by restrictions associated with combating the spread of the novel Coronavirus.
COVID-19 is expected to last for many months, with a potential resurgence in the fall. There is also the threat of a recession. In these uncertain times, one thing is certain, the unemployment rate for the individuals we serve will skyrocket, and opportunities for full freedom of choice in all aspects of work and life will disappear, particularly if CEA does not survive this crisis.
Please help us, help those who need it most! The people with disabilities who need the coaching and guidance to hold onto their jobs, and the many hundreds who will need the job search and coaching in the future, in what will be a very different working environment after the recovery.
