Help us support our Scholars during this time of need.
The COVID-19 crisis has exacerbated the already deep chasm in education and health care resources among communities of color and low-income communities. A great education, one that breaks down barriers and models equity, is what Great Lakes Academy (GLA) strives to provide its students every day. While COVID 19 may have physically shut GLA’s doors, we refuse to let it destroy our students’ access to learning.
In anticipation of the closure, GLA staff mobilized quickly, distributing initial learning materials and meals for families. The school’s leadership team developed at-home learning plans and supported teachers in setting up interactive, remote learning platforms. The day before the closure, GLA worked with families to distribute Chromebooks to all 4-6 graders who didn’t have computer access at home. GLA leadership held a second distribution day 2 weeks later for any remaining families as well as grades 2 & 3. Though we've made progress, there remain many scholars without chromebooks, internet, or other learning materials at home, making it nearly impossible to participate in remote learning lessons.
With your support, we will be able to provide ongoing virtual learning through the end of the school year and robust ongoing summer programing for our whole school community.
