PineCone believes that roots matter. And in North Carolina, our roots run deep in the tradition of making music. North Carolina is home to some of the finest singers, songwriters, musicians, and luthiers in the world. Ballad singing, blues, bluegrass, gospel, and old-time string band music are just some of the folk music traditions passed down through generations that remain prominent in our communities today. Located in the NC Piedmont, in the capital city of Raleigh, PineCone is the largest, most active presenter of folk music in the state.
Founded in 1984, PineCone, the Piedmont Council of Traditional Music, is a non-profit organization that presents more than 200 programs annually, including more than 30 concerts, youth programs, participatory jams and sessions, and a weekly radio show. Since 2013, PineCone has also been the producer of IBMA Bluegrass Live! powered by PNC, the festival component of the IBMA World of Bluegrass.
PineCone is uniquely focused on connecting people to place through programs that highlight and celebrate North Carolina’s vibrant music traditions and showcasing world class traditional and roots music as a dynamic, diverse, and highly participatory art form through concerts, festivals, radio shows, and more. PineCone supports the livelihoods of working musicians throughout all stages of their careers; inspires and engages the next generation of musicians and music industry professionals through youth programs led by our Youth Council; fosters an increased sense of connection to North Carolina’s vibrant cultural fabric; connects musicians and fans of all backgrounds and abilities who share a passion for North Carolina’s exciting musical heritage; and educates through workshops, professional development, and documentary projects.
PineCone supports the livelihoods of working artists, inspires and connects fans, educates youth and adult audiences, documents traditions, and provides opportunities for musicians to learn from one another. Each of the three elements – preservation, presentation, and promotion – plays an important role in ensuring the continued vitality and viability of traditional arts in North Carolina’s Piedmont.
We kindly ask that you join us in supporting our mission. Your gift will help PineCone continue to support roots music and musicians all year-round. And whether our events are virtual or in-person, we want to help you continue to feel connected through music.
