In lieu of flowers, the family of June Ayers has requested that donations in June’s honor be made to NAF’s Dr. Tiller Patient Assistance Fund. June was a longtime NAF member and owner and director of Reproductive Health Services in Montgomery, AL. All of us at NAF send our heartfelt condolences to her family, clinic staff, and friends during this sad time.
Throughout her life, June stepped up where she was needed. She started out at the front desk of Reproductive Health Services in her early 20s and worked her way up to become the clinic owner, stepping in just before her 30th birthday to take over the clinic and prevent it from closing. Over four decades, she fought many legal challenges and political attacks in order to keep the clinic open. She was a fierce and feisty woman who would not back down. Inside the clinic, June brought warmth and a personal touch to her work. She assisted with almost every role at the clinic to ensure that each patient had a safe, calm, and loving experience. If you called the clinic, it was often Ms. June herself who answered the phone and scheduled appointments. She frequently helped out in the procedure room, holding an ultrasound probe or a patient’s hand. In 2015, June was awarded the Roger Baldwin Medal of Liberty by the ACLU for her work to keep abortion care available in her community. When she accepted the award, she said:
“….I feel like we are fighting for women and their families and their right to self-determination. Being able to choose when to have children is a basic human right and I am pleased to have been in a group of like-minded, progressive, intelligent individuals who are also, each and every one of you, human rights activists....I believe the tide is turning—I really do—and I hope that I am here to see it wash across this nation."
The Dr. Tiller Patient Assistance Fund primarily helps cover travel-related expenses for women who need to travel to obtain their abortion care. This fund honors the legacy of long-time NAF member, Dr. George Tiller who was murdered by an anti-abortion extremist in 2009. By donating to this fund, 100% of your gift will go to help women access the safe, high-quality abortion care they need. The NAF Hotline Fund operates the largest national, toll-free, multi-lingual Hotline for abortion referrals and financial assistance in the U.S. and Canada. We provide callers with accurate information, options counseling, and referrals to providers of quality abortion care. We also provide case management services and limited financial assistance to help you afford the cost of your care and travel-related expenses.
All donations are fully tax-deductible. 100% of your contribution will support patients with financial assistance so they can access their abortion care.
