Hi, I’m Ashley. I'm 10, and this campaign is my community service passion project.
There are bad days, and there are REALLY BAD days. Imagine urgently needing blood but the hospital being out of the blood you need to survive?
Our blood supply comes from donors. Unfortunately, blood supply shortages are a frequent problem… a frequent problem that you have the power to help fix.
Want to be part of a community of life-saving superheroes? One pint of donated blood can save up to three lives!
Donated red blood cells must be used within 42 days, and platelets must be used within 5 days. These low storage lives mean that the need for blood donations is constant, and a steady stream of donors are needed every day. This is problematic because there are often blood shortages especially during the summer and winter holidays.
Today only 3% of the eligible U.S. population donates blood. If all eligible blood donors gave blood 3 times a year, blood shortages would be rare.
Given the need for blood is constant, how can we help build a steady supply throughout the year? If those who can give commit to giving every year during the month of their birthday and the birthday months of two of their loved ones, this habit would help ensure a more consistent blood supply this year and every year after. In other words, make it a habit of giving life to others when you are celebrating your life and the lives of those you love. You never know when you might have a bad day that will make you dependent on the kindness of a hero.
