We envision a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dream. We are creating a community of girls empowered to be their best, by teaching them the skills they need to be strong, confident, and healthy women.
WHY AM I SO PASSIONATE ABOUT GOTR?
Now, more than ever, girls should be empowered with confidence. They need to have faith in their phenomenal abilities, resist negative self thinking, and stand up for others, and most importantly, themselves.
Research shows that boys and girls run neck and neck, confidence-wise, up to until age 8. This is where for girls, their confidence takes a huge hit. A recent study found that girls' confidence drops by 30% between the ages of 8 and 14, a trajectory that continues into high school.
By offering tailored programming to reach girls in 3rd to 8th grade, Girls on the Run focuses on helping girls:
- build positive self-image,
- understand their emotions and how to express them,
- embrace differences among their peers, and
- make intentional decisions.
These are foundational building blocks for igniting confidence in girls who will grow up to be our next generation of strong women.
With chapters today in all 50 states, Girls on the Run (GOTR) facilitates before and after school programs at elementary and middle schools nationwide. These programs inspire girls to be healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.
In Northern Virgina, Girls on the Run has served over 60,000 girls since 2000, creating positive impact for these girls, their families, and the volunteer coaches who serve them.
