Ten years ago, my mom, Patricia A. Gundersen, Ed.D, died from stage IV metastatic cervical cancer. She was 55. I was only 26. My life was changed forever.
In the intervening decade, so much has happened in my life. I changed jobs twice and moved apartments the same number of times; I met and married my husband; I ran three half marathons; I traveled to South Korea for the first time since my birth; and I lost my beloved and faithful canine companion, Georgia. All these events have been marked by the absence of my mom's presence.
I also found Gilda's Club New York City, a nonprofit organization that provides FREE emotional and social support for people living with cancer. I became a member of the Associate Board, then Chairperson of that board for three years. Most significantly, I started the annual tradition of raising money for GCNYC by riding in the TD Bank Five Boro Bike Tour. To date, I have raised over $12,000 and ridden over 300 miles to benefit the members of GCNYC in memory of my mom. I know she would be proud of this, and of everything I've accomplished in the last ten years.
2019 marks my eighth ride - to mark the ten-year anniversary of my mom's death and honor her legacy, I hope you will help me raise $3000 for GCNYC. It's my way of ensuring she never misses out on this important tradition that helps so many people.
