This year, in this season of giving, I am holding a fundraiser for the organization that I have been involved with for more than 7 years as a volunteer. Sometimes it is hard to still be faithful to an organization that you know from the inside for so long, but not with ETM-LA. This one is great. Please help.
What we do:
Education Through Music - Los Angeles was founded with the mission to provide and promote quality music education in disadvantaged schools as part of the core curriculum for every child to nurture students' academic achievement and their creative and overall development. ETM-LA partners with school districts and schools to further access for students in low-income area communities.
I was fortunate to have received some music education growing up and have seen the effects of it.
Until my family had an opportunity to buy an instrument, I drew a piano on a piece of paper to learn and practice. In 3rd grade after my weekly guitar class, I would come home and work hard on visualizing guitar in my head to remember everything I learned and be ready for the next week’s class. But of course, having an instrument available makes a difference. If a kid has a passion but no opportunity, we should support it when we can. Eventually, I succeeded academically but the music made it all fun and very possibly kept me going.
I believe in education and equal opportunity.
I believe that music education teaches the critical attributes such as focus, motivation, and discipline and the critical stages of children’s lives.
Unique Value Proposition.
This program provides music education for EVERY child, not just for selected or gifted students. And while some children can choose to follow the art route (and this is an opportunity for kids to explore), I believe that music education is a catalyst for children to grow in other areas of their lives. It can also be a healthy getaway for a kid to stay away from destructive activities.
"Kids who are involved with the arts have higher grades and are less likely to drop out of school"(Ruppert, 2009).
"Kids who play musical instruments are likely to have higher self-esteem, confidence, discipline, concentration, and emotional intelligence than kids who don’t play instruments" (Hallam, 2010).
"Children’s music education has even been linked to better reading, writing and mathematical skills" (Hallam, 2010).
Leadership, efficiency, and effectiveness.
I believe in and trust the leadership of this organization. The executive director, who started this program in LA, is an inspiration to me in her discipline of staying faithful to the mission, the kids, while also being shrewd on the business side of things.
Efficiency is important, and we are disciplined with our costs so that more funds can go to the program. For example, I come to the office to help with a mailer so we can save on mailing costs and put money into music.
Here is an example of what the money can do:
$12.50 Melody Sponsor. Give a child music classes for one month.
$25 Harmonic Sponsor. Give a child music classes for 2 months.
$50 Symphonic Sponsor. Give a child music classes for 4 months.
$75 Baton Sponsor. Give a child music classes for half a year.
$150 Adopt-A-Student Sponsor. Give a child music classes for a full year.
We have seen the results. The beauty of being involved long-term is that you can see kids grow up and succeed. This year more schools want ETM-LA to come to them because there are kids that are walking in the halls happy and singing.
Please support this.
