On Wednesday, June 26th, Gianna will be donating her hair for the second time to Children With Hair Loss. Children With Hair Loss is a non-profit organization that provides hair replacements to children and young adults with medically-related hair loss. Two years ago, at the age of 4, Gianna decided she wanted to cut her hair short for the first time. I told her about hair donation and her eyes lit up and said that she wanted to do that. Since she was so little, I wanted to find a place that provided for children so that Gianna could really relate to what she was about to do. I found Children With Hair Loss and I showed her the website with all the kids and their stories. We had a great discussion about how some kids get sick and the affects of the medicine, illnesses, and injuries that prevent kids from having hair just like hers. I told her about my college friend whose daughter was diagnosed with leukemia about the same age as she was, and how she lost her hair. I showed her pictures of my friend's daughter when she was going through treatment and when she lost her hair. We then looked at the pictures of the kids when they received their care kit with human hair replacent. Gianna gasped at the pictures of how happy the kids were when they received their package. So Gianna cut a total of 10 inches and donated 8 inches in addition to a monetary donation. It truly was amazing at how brave she was to do such a selfless act, and she even said she couldn't wait to do it again right after she cut her hair and she saw more pictures of children getting their kits. Me on the otherhand, I was sad to see her lose the long hair she had for so long, but I remembered that my daughter was healthy and her hair would grow back.
The reason I like this organization so much, is that there is absolutely no cost to the recipient and they continue to provide for the child as they grow until they reach 21. This is not always the case with organizations that take hair donations. Many families of Children With Hair Loss have extensive medical bills, and the cost per hair replacement and kit is approximately $5000 a year.
