Hi! I'm Dave. I'm a happliy married father of four daughters and I live in Exeter, NH. I really hate cancer. I super-hate childhood cancer. Please consider helping me do something about it!
I'm signing up for my second Boston Marathon thanks to the good folks at Golf Fights Cancer (GFC). Last year's race was the hardest and yet most rewarding thing I've ever done- so why not do it again! While finishing a marathon was something I never thought I'd accomplish, so was raising $12,000 in the fight towards finding a cure for rare childhood cancers.
My story: Less than 3 years ago, I weighed well over 300 pounds and couldn't jog- nevermind run- at all. I've worked hard since to lose over 100 pounds through a combination of diet and exercise- primarily through running.
I'm passionate about the work GFC does as it affects those I care about, like my niece, Kiley.
Kiley was diagnosed with Stage 4 Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer of the soft-tissue when she was only 5 years old. She's currently 10 and is beating the odds for those diagnosed with her type of cancer, but we worry it might return.
I'm running for her and for all those affected by cancer - but specifically, for those affected by childhood cancer. Of the $4.9 billion 2014 National Cancer Institute (NCI) budget, only 4% went to research around childhood cancer. That's unacceptable.
Help me reach my fundraising goal so that kids like my niece have a fighting chance to run their own marathons one day.
I will be running to directly support the efforts of those on the front lines who work to find a cure for these types of childhood cancers- specifically the team at Children's Cancer Therapy Development Institute (https://www.cc-tdi.org/), as well as for Rett's Roost, to help those trying to cope with life after cancer.
Rett's Roost (http://rettsroost.org/) is a charity that works to create a sanctuary for families affected by childhood cancer or child loss, offering a community of loving-kindness and supportive activities in a peaceful, natural setting to ease their experience with trauma and grief.
Rett's Roost annual Superhero 5K is actually how I got into running after my weight loss and I am passionate about helping them in their efforts.
Thank you for your consideration and support!
