In 1892, William DeGraw, a prominent Teaneck resident, built a beautiful home for his family. In the early 1900's, this home became Bright Side Manor and began a long tradition of providing a home and services for older adults. Over 100 years and many renovations later, Bright Side Manor now provides assisted living for 65 residents. It stands apart from other assisted living industry facilities in many ways. Besides its long and rich history, Bright Side Manor is the only assisted living community that is affordable! Assisted living facilities in Northern New Jersey cost, on average, $6700 per month, far more money than most seniors can afford. Medicaid will cover the cost of care for low income seniors but most facilities simply don't accept residents on Medicaid. Bright Side Manor's low monthly fee and flexible Medicaid policies make it the one place in Bergen County that all seniors can afford.
We are proud of the excellent care Bright Side Manor provides and honored to be a resource for those with moderate means. Sadly, we have outgrown our distinctive and historic building. While the building's age lends charm, it also means that rooms are small and common areas are quite limited. Our dining and living room only seat half of our residents at a time. There is no dedicated activity room. Our nurse's station is in the middle of a busy corridor opposite the one and only elevator. Congestion causes gridlock as residents try to get by each other with walkers and canes. The majority of our residents live in shared rooms while many would prefer a private space.
An addition has been designed which will include a second elevator, second dining room, a dedicated activity room, a redesigned nursing suite which will ensure greater privacy and treatment space , reduce the number of shared rooms and add more private accommodations . It will bring more light into the older building and offer a secure outdoor space so that even residents who are confused can enjoy time in the fresh air.
This long overdue project will significantly improve and update our residents' environment while maintaining its old world charm and tradition of excellence. Most importantly, it will ensure that Bright Side Manor is prepared for the NEXT 100 years as older adults live longer and the assisted living industry continues to evolve. Finally, it will ensure that ALL older adults, not just the affluent, will have access to the best care and services in a supportive , safe and comfortable environment.
